Ayah 1 Play Ayah
بَرَآءَةٞ baraatunFreedom from obligationsمِّنَ minafromٱللَّهِ al-lahiAllahوَرَسُولِهِۦٓ warasulihiand His Messengerإِلَى ilatoٱلَّذِينَ alladhinathose (with) whomعَٰهَدتُّم ahadttumyou made a treatyمِّنَ minafromٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ al-mush'rikinathe polytheistsﰀ
TRANSLITERATION
baraatun mina al-lahi warasulihi ila alladhina ahadttum mina al-mush'rikina
English - Sahih International
[This is a declaration of] disassociation, from Allah and His Messenger, to those with whom you had made a treaty among the polytheists.
Ayah 2 Play Ayah
فَسِيحُواْ fasihuSo move aboutفِي fiinٱلۡأَرۡضِ al-ardithe landأَرۡبَعَةَ arba'ata(during) fourأَشۡهُرٖ ashhurinmonthsوَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ wa-i'lamubut knowأَنَّكُمۡ annakumthat youغَيۡرُ ghayru(can) notمُعۡجِزِي mu'jiziescapeٱللَّهِ al-lahiAllahوَأَنَّ wa-annaand thatٱللَّهَ al-lahaAllahمُخۡزِي mukh'zi(is) the One Who (will) disgraceٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ al-kafirinathe disbelieversﰁ
TRANSLITERATION
fasihu fi al-ardi arba'ata ashhurin wa-i'lamu annakum ghayru mu'jizi al-lahi wa-anna al-laha mukh'zi al-kafirina
English - Sahih International
So travel freely, [O disbelievers], throughout the land [during] four months but know that you cannot cause failure to Allah and that Allah will disgrace the disbelievers.
Ayah 3 Play Ayah
وَأَذَٰنٞ wa-adhanunAnd an announcementمِّنَ minafrom Allahٱللَّهِ al-lahifrom Allahوَرَسُولِهِۦٓ warasulihiand His Messengerإِلَى ilatoٱلنَّاسِ al-nasithe peopleيَوۡمَ yawma(on the) dayٱلۡحَجِّ al-haji(of) the greater Pilgrimageٱلۡأَكۡبَرِ al-akbari(of) the greater Pilgrimageأَنَّ annathatٱللَّهَ al-lahaAllahبَرِيٓءٞ barion(is) free from obligationsمِّنَ mina[of]ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ al-mush'rikina(to) the polytheistsوَرَسُولُهُۥۚ warasuluhuand (so is) His Messengerفَإِن fa-inSo ifتُبۡتُمۡ tub'tumyou repentفَهُوَ fahuwathen, it isخَيۡرٞ khayrunbestلَّكُمۡۖ lakumfor youوَإِن wa-inBut ifتَوَلَّيۡتُمۡ tawallaytumyou turn awayفَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ fa-i'lamuthen knowأَنَّكُمۡ annakumthat youغَيۡرُ ghayru(can) notمُعۡجِزِي mu'jiziescapeٱللَّهِۗ al-lahiAllahوَبَشِّرِ wabashiriAnd give glad tidingsٱلَّذِينَ alladhina(to) those whoكَفَرُواْ kafarudisbelieveبِعَذَابٍ bi'adhabinof a punishmentأَلِيمٍ aliminpainfulﰂ
TRANSLITERATION
wa-adhanun mina al-lahi warasulihi ila al-nasi yawma al-haji al-akbari anna al-laha barion mina al-mush'rikina warasuluhu fa-in tub'tum fahuwa khayrun lakum wa-in tawallaytum fa-i'lamu annakum ghayru mu'jizi al-lahi wabashiri alladhina kafaru bi'adhabin alimin
English - Sahih International
And [it is] an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage that Allah is disassociated from the disbelievers, and [so is] His Messenger. So if you repent, that is best for you; but if you turn away - then know that you will not cause failure to Allah. And give tidings to those who disbelieve of a painful punishment.
Ayah 4 Play Ayah
إِلَّا illaExceptٱلَّذِينَ alladhinathose (with) whomعَٰهَدتُّم ahadttumyou have a treatyمِّنَ minaamongٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ al-mush'rikinathe polytheistsثُمَّ thummathenلَمۡ lamnotيَنقُصُوكُمۡ yanqusukumthey have failed youشَيۡـٔٗا shayan(in any) thingوَلَمۡ walamand notيُظَٰهِرُواْ yuzahiruthey have supportedعَلَيۡكُمۡ alaykumagainst youأَحَدٗا ahadananyoneفَأَتِمُّوٓاْ fa-atimmuso fulfilإِلَيۡهِمۡ ilayhimto themعَهۡدَهُمۡ ahdahumtheir treatyإِلَىٰ ilatillمُدَّتِهِمۡۚ muddatihimtheir termإِنَّ innaIndeedٱللَّهَ al-lahaAllahيُحِبُّ yuhibbulovesٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ al-mutaqinathe righteousﰃ
TRANSLITERATION
illa alladhina ahadttum mina al-mush'rikina thumma lam yanqusukum shayan walam yuzahiru alaykum ahadan fa-atimmu ilayhim ahdahum ila muddatihim inna al-laha yuhibbu al-mutaqina
English - Sahih International
Excepted are those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists and then they have not been deficient toward you in anything or supported anyone against you; so complete for them their treaty until their term [has ended]. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous [who fear Him].
Ayah 5 Play Ayah
فَإِذَا fa-idhaThen whenٱنسَلَخَ insalakhahave passedٱلۡأَشۡهُرُ al-ashhuruthe sacred monthsٱلۡحُرُمُ al-hurumuthe sacred monthsفَٱقۡتُلُواْ fa-uq'tuluthen killٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ al-mush'rikinathe polytheistsحَيۡثُ haythuwhereverوَجَدتُّمُوهُمۡ wajadttumuhumyou find themوَخُذُوهُمۡ wakhudhuhumand seize themوَٱحۡصُرُوهُمۡ wa-uh'suruhumand besiege themوَٱقۡعُدُواْ wa-uq'uduand sit (in wait)لَهُمۡ lahumfor themكُلَّ kulla(at) everyمَرۡصَدٖۚ marsadinplace of ambushفَإِن fa-inBut ifتَابُواْ tabuthey repentوَأَقَامُواْ wa-aqamuand establishٱلصَّلَوٰةَ al-salatathe prayerوَءَاتَوُاْ waatawuand giveٱلزَّكَوٰةَ al-zakatathe zakahفَخَلُّواْ fakhalluthen leaveسَبِيلَهُمۡۚ sabilahumtheir wayإِنَّ innaIndeedٱللَّهَ al-lahaAllahغَفُورٞ ghafurun(is) Oft-Forgivingرَّحِيمٞ rahimunMost Mercifulﰄ
TRANSLITERATION
fa-idha insalakha al-ashhuru al-hurumu fa-uq'tulu al-mush'rikina haythu wajadttumuhum wakhudhuhum wa-uh'suruhum wa-uq'udu lahum kulla marsadin fa-in tabu wa-aqamu al-salata waatawu al-zakata fakhallu sabilahum inna al-laha ghafurun rahimun
English - Sahih International
And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Ayah 6 Play Ayah
وَإِنۡ wa-inAnd ifأَحَدٞ ahadunanyoneمِّنَ minaofٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ al-mush'rikinathe polytheistsٱسۡتَجَارَكَ is'tajarakaseek your protectionفَأَجِرۡهُ fa-ajir'huthen grant him protectionحَتَّىٰ hattauntilيَسۡمَعَ yasma'ahe hearsكَلَٰمَ kalama(the) Words of Allahٱللَّهِ al-lahi(the) Words of Allahثُمَّ thummaThenأَبۡلِغۡهُ abligh'huescort himمَأۡمَنَهُۥۚ mamanahu(to) his place of safetyذَٰلِكَ dhalikaThatبِأَنَّهُمۡ bi-annahum(is) because theyقَوۡمٞ qawmun(are) a peopleلَّا la(who) do not knowيَعۡلَمُونَ ya'lamuna(who) do not knowﰅ
TRANSLITERATION
wa-in ahadun mina al-mush'rikina is'tajaraka fa-ajir'hu hatta yasma'a kalama al-lahi thumma abligh'hu mamanahu dhalika bi-annahum qawmun la ya'lamuna
English - Sahih International
And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah. Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.

Ayah 7 Play Ayah
كَيۡفَ kayfaHowيَكُونُ yakunucan (there) beلِلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ lil'mush'rikinafor the polytheistsعَهۡدٌ ahduna covenantعِندَ indawithٱللَّهِ al-lahiAllahوَعِندَ wa'indaand withرَسُولِهِۦٓ rasulihiHis Messengerإِلَّا illaexceptٱلَّذِينَ alladhinathose (with) whomعَٰهَدتُّمۡ ahadttumyou made a treatyعِندَ indanearٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ al-masjidiAl-Masjidٱلۡحَرَامِۖ al-haramiAl-Haraamفَمَا famaSo long asٱسۡتَقَٰمُواْ is'taqamuthey are uprightلَكُمۡ lakumto youفَٱسۡتَقِيمُواْ fa-is'taqimuthen you be uprightلَهُمۡۚ lahumto themإِنَّ innaIndeedٱللَّهَ al-lahaAllahيُحِبُّ yuhibbulovesٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ al-mutaqinathe righteousﰆ
TRANSLITERATION
kayfa yakunu lil'mush'rikina ahdun inda al-lahi wa'inda rasulihi illa alladhina ahadttum inda al-masjidi al-harami fama is'taqamu lakum fa-is'taqimu lahum inna al-laha yuhibbu al-mutaqina
English - Sahih International
How can there be for the polytheists a treaty in the sight of Allah and with His Messenger, except for those with whom you made a treaty at al-Masjid al-Haram? So as long as they are upright toward you, be upright toward them. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous [who fear Him].
Ayah 8 Play Ayah
كَيۡفَ kayfaHowوَإِن wa-inwhile, ifيَظۡهَرُواْ yazharuthey gain dominanceعَلَيۡكُمۡ alaykumover youلَا lathey do not regard (the ties)يَرۡقُبُواْ yarqubuthey do not regard (the ties)فِيكُمۡ fikumwith youإِلّٗا illan(of) kinshipوَلَا walaand notذِمَّةٗۚ dhimmatancovenant of protectionيُرۡضُونَكُم yur'dunakumThey satisfy youبِأَفۡوَٰهِهِمۡ bi-afwahihimwith their mouthsوَتَأۡبَىٰ watababut refuseقُلُوبُهُمۡ qulubuhumtheir heartsوَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ wa-aktharuhumand most of themفَٰسِقُونَ fasiquna(are) defiantly disobedientﰇ
TRANSLITERATION
kayfa wa-in yazharu alaykum la yarqubu fikum illan wala dhimmatan yur'dunakum bi-afwahihim wataba qulubuhum wa-aktharuhum fasiquna
English - Sahih International
How [can there be a treaty] while, if they gain dominance over you, they do not observe concerning you any pact of kinship or covenant of protection? They satisfy you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse [compliance], and most of them are defiantly disobedient.
Ayah 9 Play Ayah
ٱشۡتَرَوۡاْ ish'tarawThey exchangeبِـَٔايَٰتِ biayati[with] the Verses of Allahٱللَّهِ al-lahi[with] the Verses of Allahثَمَنٗا thamanan(for) a little priceقَلِيلٗا qalilan(for) a little priceفَصَدُّواْ fasadduand they hinder (people)عَن anfromسَبِيلِهِۦٓۚ sabilihiHis wayإِنَّهُمۡ innahumIndeedسَآءَ saaevilمَا ma(is) whatكَانُواْ kanuthey used toيَعۡمَلُونَ ya'malunadoﰈ
TRANSLITERATION
ish'taraw biayati al-lahi thamanan qalilan fasaddu an sabilihi innahum saa ma kanu ya'maluna
English - Sahih International
They have exchanged the signs of Allah for a small price and averted [people] from His way. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.
Ayah 10 Play Ayah
لَا laNotيَرۡقُبُونَ yarqubunathey respect (the ties)فِي fitowardsمُؤۡمِنٍ mu'minina believerإِلّٗا illan(of) kinshipوَلَا walaand notذِمَّةٗۚ dhimmatancovenant of protectionوَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ wa-ulaikaAnd thoseهُمُ humu[they]ٱلۡمُعۡتَدُونَ al-mu'taduna(are) the transgressorsﰉ
TRANSLITERATION
la yarqubuna fi mu'minin illan wala dhimmatan wa-ulaika humu al-mu'taduna
English - Sahih International
They do not observe toward a believer any pact of kinship or covenant of protection. And it is they who are the transgressors.
